RODENTS

Urban Pest Control can handle your rodent issues from rats in your attic, causing breaches in plumbing and eating thru electrical wires, gophers making a mess of your landscape to mice running around your kitchen. We recommend an full inspection of your property to find their habitats and where they are entering structure(s). We have vast experience and a variety of options in ridding your property of these unwanted creatures and preventing them from reentering structures.
Roof rats can carry disease and are known to be destructive, gnawing through pipes, wiring and destroying citrus. They are generally active at night and during the spring months.
Roof rats are usually dark colored with very long hairless tails. They only need a hole the size of a quarter to enter a home and they are very good climbers. Outside, roof rats will nest in trees, woodpiles, garbage, and plants. They are attracted to citrus trees and the fruit left on the ground
Roof rats often enter homes where pipes or utility wires enter a building or through garage doors that do not fit tightly, or through pet doors. Because roof rats are excellent climbers and can get through very small openings, excluding them from an area or structure is difficult.
Roof rats may nest in your neighbor’s yard but find food in your yard. Outdoors, they can travel several hundred feet in a single night to find their survival resources. They prefer to nest in secluded areas above ground in such places as attics, soffits, overhead garage storage. Roof rats sometime burrow in the ground especially in hot, dry environments in the vine cover of fences or buildings, and in wood piles or other stored materials where harborage can be found. They favor dense non-deciduous trees or trees with hollow cavities and the crowns of palm trees, especially when old fronds are not removed.
Pack rats are known for stealing shiny, bright objects to collect and decorate their home with. They are also known for chewing through wiring in your vehicle or your home. Pack rats will build messy nests on your property and should be eliminated
MICE
The house mouse is the most common rodent pest in most parts of the world. Excellent hearing, vision, smell and touch have enabled the mouse to be highly adaptable to homes and indoor buildings. All they need is a 1/4″ opening to be able to enter a building, so they often have access to many places along the building’s perimeter.  A female house mouse can give birth to up to a dozen babies every three weeks. That’s 150 babies a year! House mice primarily feed on plants, but they will also eat meat and dairy products. They will drink water but require very little of it. They will eat their own droppings to acquire nutrients produced by bacteria in their guts! House mice live in structures, but they can live outdoors. They breed throughout the year and often share nests with their “relatives”.
GOPHERS
Gophers are small, burrowing rodents about five to twelve inches long with an average weight of 8 ounces. Powerfully built in the forequarters, their front feet have long, sharp claws. Gophers have brownish soft fur, large check pouches and flattened heads with small ears and eyes. Their hairy tails are about four inches long, and are used to navigate through tunnels when moving backwards.
Gophers create fan-shaped mounds that are often large enough to cause damage, it is not uncommon for gopher tunnels to interfere with irrigation systems, dams, fields and, of course, homeowners’ lawns and gardens. They use their cheek pouches to store food before taking it to their burrows, where they stockpile astounding amounts of food. Gophers are omnivores and love to eat nuts, berries, grass, bulbs, leaves and insects.
Gophers breed only once or twice a year, typically in the spring. Female gophers give birth to three or four young per litter after a gestation period of less than three weeks. The young develop rapidly and by five weeks are weaned and ready to establish their own burrows. The average lifespan for a gopher is two to three years.  These large networks can often contain thousands of gopher residents. Gophers are attracted to moist, light-textured soil with edible vegetation. Their main runways are located up to 18 inches below the surface, though their nesting chambers are much deeper, often six feet below the surface.
Gophers should be treated as soon as they are discovered!
