Your child’s imagination will know no limits when you spend
quality time reading to your child. Children’s books help the bond between
parent and child grows deeper when you snuggle together in a comfortable chair
while reading and learning and going on new adventures. As you consider building
your library of children’s books, remember it doesn’t matter what you read. It
only matters that you spend a little time each day letting your child know the
importance of reading.
Children’s books are available for every stage of development. Your
baby can enjoy his first book from the moment he is born. Picture books with
bright colors, familiar objects and things to touch, begin the process of life
long reading enjoyment for your child. As your child develops, so will his
attention span. At first he most likely will just enjoy turning the pages, but
will eventually get caught up in the story. Children’s books come in formats to
encourage self exploration. There are durable board books, pop-up books, and,
touch and feel books with different textures. Don’t be surprised if your child
wants to read the same book over and over again. The familiarity and repetition
are all good developmental steps that provide security and a sound base for
future reading skills.
Children’s books have been written on virtually every subject:
pets, people, and places. There are how-to books, books about bath time, potty
time, play time and nap time. Stories for children have been written for every
season, celebration and holiday. It really doesn’t matter what the topic is of
the children’s books, it just matters that you read with your child. Let your
child’s interests guide what children’s books you read together. Even as
children learn to read on his own, he will enjoy having children’s books read
to him and showing you how well he can read. Whether it’s a picture book,
chapter book, series or set, let your child choose the kinds of children’s
books they would like to read each time your visit the library or bookstore.
